KADMOS STUDIA anno II, numero 1
Saggi - Mitteleuropa
Abstract:The paper examines multilinguism in Carlo Michelstaedter's cor- respondence, starting from a letter to Gaetano Chiavacci, where he talks about a recent trip, describing it as "a true linguistic Babylon". The study considers the use of German in correspondence with the young Russian anarchist Nadia Baraden; Carlo's perfect command of French in a letter to playwright Henri Lavedan, the use of German and French words and frases in some letters to his sister Paula and his family, the use of Greek and French evidenced by a letter to his friend Chiavacci, and the use of Greek and German in letters to his friend Enrico Mreule. Finally, he uses Friulian in the letters to his father and mother, and in the one written in Piran to Chiavacci. The paper concludes by noting the lack of translations of Mi- chelstaedter in Croatian and therefore presents a first translation of the poem A Senia.
