Studi e ricerche
Abstract: The paper intends to clarify some inaccuracies in the biography of the Goriuzian linguist and glottologist Graziadio Isaia Ascoli, and in particular on the notion of "self-taught" often attributed to the scholar. The research examines some important source testimonies for the biography of Ascoli, including the testimony of Michelstaedter, also taking into consideration the role of figures such as Prof. Pio Rajna and the Hebraist Samuel David Luzzato; and finally the observations of the philologist Žarko Muljačić and his criticisms of Bartoli's monography Der Dalmatische (Wien 1906) and his Comemorative, politicly manupulated, speach about Ascoli's lack of knowledge of Slovenian in 1930, publisched in the gorizian journal Ce fastu?.
