Abstract: Constantin Frantz, a 19th century philosopher and political publicist, is a controversial figure. Frantz’s thought has been interpreted as a forerunner of themes and theses that found development in National Socialism and also, on the other hand, as a proponent of a federalist model of Europe, still capable of inspiring European unity. The article shows the importance of Frantz‘s trip through Mitteleuropa for his political orientation. In detail, it analyses his essay Prussia, Poland and Germany. A Contribution to the Reorganisation of Europe, from which the basic Frantz‘s political ideas and the experience that inspired them clearly emerge.
