Frammenti e visioni di un mosaico goriziano

Abstract: This paper focuses on some emblematic figures and particularities of Gorizia's cultural history, that are little known and generally devalued by nationalist historiography. The aim is to contribute to the rediscovery of the complex and unique multilingual and intercultural identity of the area and to promote a deeper knowledge of it, as aimed by the ICM project for the establishment of a multilingual and intercultural Cultural District (GO mosaic). In detail, we mention the sculptor Alfonso Canciani and the Slovenian poet Alojz Gradnik, and then recall the role played by the famous Staatsgymnasium of Gorizia, where German, Italian and Slovenian literature was studied together, as expression of a civilization very far from the one imposed after the First World War. Finally, with reference to some original aspects of the multilingual situation in the Eighteenth Century, the author presents further contributions related to the evolution of multilingualism in Gorizia from the Middle Ages to the present day.
